What does developing my website involve?

I find it helpful to divide the process into four steps:

  • Step 1: defining your website
  • Step 2: designing your website
  • Step 3: developing your website
  • Step 4: delivering your website
The first - and perhaps most important - step involves clarifying why you want a website, and why your intended audience is likely to visit it. Then, based on this information, step two involves creating some design options for you to consider - which can be refined as necessary.

Once you are happy with the design, step three involves using computer code to build the templates and stylesheets that will determine the structure and appearance of your website, constructing the individual web pages, and adding your text, graphics and other content material.

The fourth - and final - step involves proof-reading the text, checking that all the page links and other features work as intended, and carrying out basic search engine optimisation (SEO) to increase the likelihood of your website being 'found' by google and other search engines.

Your completed website is then ready to be uploaded onto the internet for a final check before it is formally launched.
